Dr. Lehrman delivered a lecture to the Department of Dental Oncology at MSKCC in NYC. The discussion focused on an innovative approach to the treatment of ONJ and ORN utilizing a specific FDA cleared protocol and Nd:YAG laser. Patients can now have options to treat this devastating disease other than radical resective surgery. As research continues, we are expanding our approach to management of this unfortunate but expected outcome of many anti-cancer drug regimens.

Osteonecrosis of the Jaw(ONJ) and Osteo-Radionecrosis(ORN), respectively, are two conditions that have been shown to be very destructive to patients who have successfully been treated for many life-threatening diseases. Everyday procedures such as extractions and treatment for periodontal (gum) diseases can become devastating to the patient because of the inability to clot normally to allow for regeneration of healthy tissues.
Using a novel approach utilizing a specific Nd:YAG laser with an FDA cleared protocol to create both a stable clot to allow for better healing, coupled with bio-stimulation of the areas affected to increase oxygenation of the tissue on a cellular level, Dr. Neal Lehrman DDS has been successfully treating these conditions in his NYC offices.

Dr. Lehrman’s seminar at the 64th American Academy of Implant Dentistry in Las Vegas, NV will focus on the issue that is now becoming an epidemic amongst the dental implant community. As communities age out, many well placed dental implants succumb to both peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis. The need for a comprehensive approach to combat this ever growing problem is discussed form both a scientific bent with an eye to offering reproducible treatment strategies.

A thorough review of the science behind the remarkable LAPIP ™ procedure was explained . Clinical cases were discussed and special attention was paid the idea that soft tissue healing holds as much information for the overall success of dental implants then to counterpart, peri-implant bone. By discussing a procedure which allows for targeted removal of diseased tissue, Dr. Lehrman showed the attendees a viable approach to this fast growing dental implant epidemic, albeit one that caries with it low morbidity and excellent chances for regeneration.

In just one decade, we have moved from utilizing lasers to treat periodontal diseases to utilizing a specific laser protocol to hone our approach in the treatment of peri-implantitis, MRONJ and now cosmetic de-pigmentation of gingiva.
By adapting the wound healing modification of the Periolase laser and the LANAP protocol, Dr. Lehrman discussed how the specific ND:YAG wavelength allows the clinician to modify the body’s own wound healing apparatus. Diseased or unwanted tissues are targeted for specific removal, while healthy connective tissue remains and allows the body to capitalize on this healing moment. Dr. Neal Lehrman, through a discussion of both laser physics and case review, demonstrated the ability of this remarkable protocol and its corollary procedures to the Department of Periodontics – Post-Graduate Division, NYU College of Dentistry.
